To adulthood

Today is my 18th birthday. Today I am legally an adult. I can vote and buy lottery tickets. This is a big step. So, today was wonderful. I got serenaded in a library by some friends and then the librarian heard and gave me chocolate. I was serenaded by a teacher in the same library. I got a present that consisted of Justin Bieber's new book (best not to ask) and The Women of Saturday Night Live DVD from my friend and her sister. My other friend surprised me and came down from Ottawa, so we hung out for a while. I gifted my birthday napkin as per usual. My peer tutoring class wished me a happy birthday in a crazy and constant way. I came home and spent time with the famjam and it was just wonderful.

I always think my birthday is going to be just like any other day, but truth is, I love my birthday. It makes me see just how many people love and care for me. It's kind of suffocating. It feels so good just to be reminded of that sometimes. So thank you to everyone.

So, here it is, my letter to myself.

Dear new adult Stephanie,

Holy shit we made it. There were some questionable times, but we're here and it feels great. 17 was a big year, but not for things you expected. You're very happy you stayed back for a year. For once you feel like someone that does something. Someone that can make a difference. You know where you want to go and actually have a realistic idea on how to get there.
17 was a year of challenges, but you're one step closer to where you want to be. You've never felt more comfortable with yourself. You've never known yourself as much. No one has ever known you as well as they do now. It feels so good.
And though it is good now, I don't know what tomorrow will bring, and now you know that it's okay. Now you know that bad days are just bad days.
Things are looking good. In a year we might be completely different. I don't know what legal drinking age Stephanie will be like, but adult Stephanie is great and looking forward to diving into life.

You're going to live and blog forever.

It's my birthday

Today I turned 17. It's been a good day. I gave my friend who has the same birthday a birthday napkin, as tradition. I was serenaded twice, not once, but twice, in my play meeting. I got a bunch of FaceBook wall writes from people I never talk to. I had chicken fingers and smile fries. I got a nice little cake. I made a wish on some candles. I lost on a scratch card.

So now I must write myself a letter because that's what I'm best at.

Dear 17 year old Stephanie,

You're not 16 anymore. Maybe you should get some of your shit together. Start caring. About anything. About yourself, about others, about life. Become busy. I know that all you want to do is watch TV, but you're going to get off that sexy ass of yours because there is a real world out there. The real world is scary and may not follow the normal patterns a show does, but it's real. Read more. I don't care how busy you are or when your shows are on; you need to get into the habit of reading more, and spending less time here. Follow your dreams. By this time next year you will hopefully be in university stressing over some assignment. Things are going to get hard, but remember that you're doing it because you love it. Go out of your comfort zone. How will you do this, I don't know. Just don't be afraid to try new things. You're supposed to be a little bit stupid. Get over yourself. Spend less time on yourself because you're kind of the worst. Let more people get to know you. Get to know more people. Sleep more. I know, sleep is death. Sleep is impossible. Sleep is totally necessary. Talk to people. People are the worst. I get that, but you need to be a little more likable. Don't forget.
I can't tell the future, but I remember your past. 16 year old Stephanie went down the wrong path and got lost. Turn around and try and find a new one. It may take a lot of time and effort but it will be worth it. You're cooler then anyone thinks. Make them see that.

17 is the age I will graduate high school. It's the age I will go to university. It is the age I will move away from home. It is the age I will learn a lot about myself. Let's get this done.

Happy Birthday Adam Young

Adam Young. Where to begin.

He is everything. He inspires me to be a better person just on the fact that he, himself is a good person. Adam doesn't do this in the way of corruption. He does it simply by optimism through his music.

I try to be optimistic, but from this blog, you probably know that it fails. I have my ups and downs, but I always come back to Owl City. People say his music is 'soft', I say it is truly gratifying. Everyday we listen to songs about loss and fear and death. We all feel those things, but should we focus on them? Should we allow ourselves to become consumed? No. We need to focus on the positive.

That's what Owl City's songs are about. If everyone goes through bad things, why should we listen to music about it?

On another note, Adam is from a small town. He is an introvert. He recently played a live show for over 60,000 people. How crazy is that? He went from loading trucks to touring the world in like three years.

He is a dreamer that has actually seen his dreams come true. There is nothing more inspiring then that.

Maybe dreams don't tun to dust. (And I will marry Adam Young one day.)

It's someones birthday

Yes friends, today is Tina Fey's birthday. Today she turns the big 41.

After all this talk about Tina, you are probably wondering why I even like her so much. Honestly, there a bunch of reasons why I look up to her. She is my idol. Let's get all corny for a second.
Tina Fey grew up in a normal family in a normal town. When she was five she was attacked by a man holding a knife. That's why she has a scar on her face.

So now we have this girl, with a visible scar on her face. Now we have this woman that is on television.

Tina is a writer. She was always behind the camera. But that changed when it became Weekend Update with Tina Fey. While writing for Saturday Night Live she got a chance to be in front of the camera. Brown hair, brown eyes, glasses. Classic.

Now she obviously stars in 30 Rock. The show she created and writes for. Tina also wrote the screen play for Mean Girls, and stars in many of my favourite movies, such as Baby Mama, Date Night and Megamind. On top of that, she has won numerous awards for her work.

Tina Fey is awesomely talented and hilarious. Let's celebrate her.
